They Don’t Sell this at Starbucks

Bali, Indonesia — You can’t get this at Starbucks. Kopi Luwak is the world’s most expensive coffee. It can sell for as much as $600 a pound. It’s high price is the result of the unusual production method of it’s beans being digested and defecated by Indonesian civit cats. It is sometimes called, “Cat Poop Coffee.” During the cat’s digestion process, the coffee cherries and pulp are removed, but the beans are not digested. A unique fermentation process occurs in the cat’s stomach, giving the beans a special flavor. When the beans are defecated, the feces are collected by the coffee farmers. The beans are then washed, dried and roasted.

I tried my first cup of Kopi Luwak Coffee at Warung Legian in Kuta Bali. The shop uses organic arabica beans and brews it in a French press. The staff is very helpful and will explain the process to you. It is best to drink it without milk, cream or sugar in order to best enjoy its flavor and aroma.

How was it? Not only did I drink one cup, I drank two. Let’s just say it was some good shit.

I’m currently in Kuta, Bali Indonesia. While I’ve been to this part of the world many other times, the oppressive heat always gets to me. You’re very close to the equator. I average at least 3-4 showers per day. If you’re here, you will be approached a lot by locals asking you to shop in their stores, offering transportation, massages, even sex. A smile and a polite, “No Thank you,” will usually make them back off. People in places like Thailand and Vietnam can be much more aggressive in their approach.

Kuta is the party place of Bali which means lots of traffic, pollution and noise here. A few days of this is more than enough for me. A lot of Australians like to come here for their holidays. One person even asked me if I was from Australia. That’s a first for me. I guess it’s because of my thick Aussie accent.

Some of the best things here are the cheap food and spas. You can get an hour massage for as little as $3-4 an hour. Some of my friends back home will want to know if these are the “Rub and Tug, Happy Endings kind.” The answer is–NO! But if you want to do something really weird, then try a fish spa.

In a fish spa, you put your feet into a tank of little guppy like fish. When you do this, they start to attack you eating all the dead skin. It feels a little weird and creepy.

These treatments run up to $100,000 rupiah, (just over $10 USD) in the higher end tourist parts of town for about 15-20 minutes, but if you get away from those parts of town you can find them for around $30,000-35,000 rupiah.
